Digestive Issues and Nutrition Response Testing®

By Cori Stern, DC

I recently had two patients with severe digestive issues within a week of one another. Both cases seemed to have no apparent cause.

The first patient was a special-needs young man whom I have been seeing for 15 years. When his mom called for an appointment, she explained that he’d had severe digestive issues for a few days and it was really interfering with his daily routine. He couldn’t go anywhere or attend his school program because of this.

This young man is non-verbal, so it’s a bit more of a challenge to find out what he is experiencing. But one of the amazing things about Nutrition Response Testing is you can communicate directly with the body to find out what’s actually going on, even if the patient can’t speak.

I did the standard Nutrition Response Testing analysis and all that showed up was a little irritation in his small intestine.  His body tested for one whole food support supplement for the small intestine at a dose of two per day.

This young man was on my mind so I checked in with the Mom the next day. She said he was still having some issues but it was slowing down. I asked her to keep me updated. Within 48 hours he was somewhat better, but the situation had not fully resolved.

I asked her to bring him back and checked him again.  I got the same result, but now he was testing for a higher dose of that same whole food supplement. Instead of two capsules he was testing for four.

Within a few hours of taking this higher dose the digestive issues stopped and the next day he was back to normal and was able to get fully back in the swing of his routine. I thought it was fascinating the way his body was SO specific about what was needed and in what time frame. His body needed to heal at a very specific rate.

The second case was a two-year-old boy. This toddler has been a patient of mine since he was conceived. Both he and his 4-year-old brother have been on a Nutrition Response Testing program with me since birth. The mom (also a patient) always brings them to me when they’re not feeling well.

On this day, their mom called for an emergency appointment and sounded very worried about the baby. He had severe stomach issues, was lethargic, running a fever, and was practically non–responsive. When she arrived at my office 20 minutes later he was limp in her arms and having stomach issues there on the spot. As you can imagine, I was very concerned. I had to talk to myself a bit to stay calm and just do what I do. I performed the usual Nutrition Response Testing evaluation to see what would help this little guy.

The evaluation revealed that his immune system was a bit challenged and his body needed a whole food vitamin C supplement. His specific dose was 2 per day and then while I was dosing him, the most amazing thing occurred!  He had the two tablets in his little hand and he suddenly perked up a bit, opened his eyes, popped one of the tablets in his mouth and ate it. His mom and I looked at each other and started laughing in relief!

He became a little more responsive and seemed to be doing better. They left my office and I checked in with his mom a few hours later.  She said so far, his stomach issues had stopped. The next day I checked in with her again and she said he was back to his normal self – tearing up the house.

I see many amazing results with my patients, but occasionally there are one or two that just seem like magic.

Two Boys with Autism and Nutrition Response Testing®

By Brad Kristiansen, DC

I had 2 young male patients that were born in Columbia, South America. An American couple who lived in Iowa near to my practice adopted them.

Before arriving in my practice, they both were diagnosed with classic Asperger Syndrome i.e. Autism. Both boys were very introverted, noncommunicative, and definitely exhibited the “don’t you dare touch me” phenomena most common with autism.

It was a good thing that Dr. Ulan had prepared me for this type of situation. I tested them with Nutrition Response Testing very quickly, only using the basic standard testing methods. This allowed me to identify what their priority body areas were that needed support first. Interestingly enough, neither boy had the brain area show up as a priority area to be addressed. One boy had what we call “blocked regulation” and the heart was the priority. Blocked regulation means the body doesn’t have the ability to control its nervous system to the point that it won’t accept any form of help. The other boy had a condition we call “switched” and had a pancreas priority. Switched is a confusion in the autonomic nervous system causing the body to “switch” normal functioning.

I put them on the Standard Process supplements that were indicated by the testing. This got the first boy unblocked and the second boy unswitched. The more difficult thing to do was to get the parents and grandparents to stop feeding them sugar. I’m happy to say that they did and next thing you know, the boys calmed down, would actually talk to me, learned American English and grew up to be normal boys!

I visited Iowa for Christmas a couple of years ago and almost got tackled in the mall by two teenage boys. It was the two boys who I took care of when they were 5 and 7. They are now 15 and 17 and darn near knocked me over at the mall. When I turned around, I was a bit confused by these 2 young men until they said, “You probably don’t remember us because we were tiny when we first met you.” Then they told me their names and of course I remembered them! It was such a joy to see how they grew up and that I was able to help them.

The reality is that this is exactly why I learned chiropractic and Nutrition Response Testing. For those 2 boys, and the many others, to help them with their exuberance for life and their gratitude is my real pay!!!

3-Year-Old Girl Gets Her Long Red Hair Back

By Brad Kristiansen, DC

I first started working with a woman with Nutrition Response Testing®. One visit, her 3-year-old daughter came along. The daughter had this gorgeous, long red hair. Some time later the mom came in and said, “My daughter’s hair is coming out in clumps.”

The mother was understandably panicky because her young daughter was losing her hair. Her scalp showed many bare spots and the hair on her head was very thin and scraggly. This little girl was upset by it and cried when she talked about it. Hair loss like this used to be extremely unusual, but because of the toxic environment we live in these days, it’s not as unusual as it used to be.

When I analyzed the little girl’s body using Nutrition Response Testing, we found a digestive problem due to sugars and starches and an immune challenge. Unfortunately the food sensitivity I found was exacerbating the immune weakness, and was one of this young girl’s favorite food items.

I also found that her weakened immune system affected her scalp and was making her hair fall out! I had previously found the same situation happening with several adults, but she was the first child. For some reason, this problem occurred more in women than men.

I recommended to the mother to stop feeding the little girl so much sugar and starchy foods. I wanted to work up to her favorite food item last. I recommended a couple of nutritional supplement products that helped the body deal with that particular immune challenge. One thing I found interesting was when I told this 3-year-old girl what was happening to her hair, she was totally willing to amend her diet and take the supplements.

On the mom and daughter’s first follow up visit, the young girl came in all beaming because she had taken her supplements and even stopped her favorite food item! More importantly to her, her hair had stopped falling out. When she told me that, she actually gave me a hug. Best “payday” I’ve had!

Within about 3 months of being on a Nutrition Response Testing program, her beautiful red hair was fully back and her scalp wasn’t showing through anywhere! Her mother even indicated that her hair was actually thicker at this point than it had been before it started falling out. (PS – I got another hug!!!)

Another successful application of the basic Nutrition Response Testing procedures that I learned in the 3-day Nutrition Response Testing Workshop!!! Thank you, Dr. Ulan, for inventing and developing this procedure!

How to Choose Hardware for your Kitchen

By Niko Papaheraklis

Even the small things matter when remodeling or designing your home. Choosing kitchen hardware may seem like a small detail, but it can throw the entire room off if you choose the wrong pieces! Below are some of our tips to help you choose kitchen hardware that will elevate your space.

Choose a theme and stick with it

There are so many different styles of kitchens out there, and they all look amazing! But it’s important to choose a style that fits you and you won’t outgrow in the years to come. Once you choose a theme, make sure you stick with it when it comes to picking out your hardware (or any design element, really.)

2. Keep the finishes cohesive

There are a wide variety of finishes, from brushed nickel to brass; from glossy to matte. While mixing and matching certain hardware can come together really well, it’s important to keep the finish the same to tie everything together.

3. Keep the color of your cabinets in mind

The color of your cabinets can help determine what type of hardware to get, and in what finish. For example, certain shades of brown aren’t very flexible and will only look good with a specific finish. Whereas white or painted cabinets can look good with just about anything.

4. Don’t forget about other appliances and fixtures

Make sure you keep in mind the finish on your appliances, light fixtures and your sink and faucet. Mixing metal finishes can look good when it’s not overdone, but having too many different finishes can throw the entire space off.

At Finecraft Contractors, if you can imagine it, we can build it. Making a space flow well is our specialty, and we love helping you choose these types of elements for your design or remodel! If you have a renovation idea or want to remodel sections of your home, call us at 301-330-9191 and we’ll give you a thoroughly thought out estimate.

PEMF THERAPY: A safe alternative for dealing with Sciatica and Lower Back Pain

by Larry Judge

OUCH!!! Sciatica. Lower back pain.

Suffering from sciatica and lower back pain can be very debilitating and lower one’s quality of life.   Many people are looking for safer non-drug methods of handling and dealing with sciatica and lower back pain.

Just what is sciatica?  Sciatica refers to back pain caused by a problem with the sciatic nerve. This is a large nerve that runs from the lower back down the back of each leg. When something injures or puts pressure on the sciatic nerve, it can cause pain in the lower back that spreads to the hip, buttocks, and leg.

Pain that radiates from your lower (lumbar) spine to your buttock and down the back of your leg is the hallmark of sciatica. You might feel the discomfort almost anywhere along the nerve pathway, but it’s especially likely to follow a path from your low back to your buttock and the back of your thigh and calf.

The pain can vary widely, from a mild ache to a sharp, burning sensation or excruciating pain. Sometimes it can feel like a jolt or electric shock. It can be worse when you cough or sneeze, and prolonged sitting can aggravate symptoms. Usually only one side of your body is affected.

Sciatica most commonly occurs when a herniated disk, bone spur on the spine or narrowing of the spine (spinal stenosis) compresses part of the nerve. This causes inflammation, pain and often some numbness in the affected leg.

One fascinating method in dealing with sciatica and Lower Back Pain is PEMF therapy. PEMF stands for Pulsed ElectroMagnetic Field. This process involves directing powerful, pulsed energy waves to different areas of a person’s body.

Research has shown that PEMF therapy can relieve sciatica by reducing inflammation, rebuilding cartilage, repairing scar tissue, muscle strains, and regenerating nerves.

All sciatic problems involve nerve damage from one cause or another. PEMF has been demonstrated to help with nerve regeneration in scientific research studies:

Previous studies confirm that pulsed magnetic field (PMF) accelerates functional recovery after a nerve crush lesion [a traumatic injury]… The influence of a new PMF application protocol (trained PMF) on nerve regeneration was studied in a model of crush injury of the sciatic nerve of rats…. PMF treatment during the 38 days following the crush injury enhanced the regeneration In addition, corrective effects of PMF on sensory fibers may be considered an important finding for neuropathic pain therapy. (1)

A scientific study conducted by a group of doctors and scientists at the John Hopkins School of Medicine concluded:

Peripheral nerve regeneration has been manipulated with… pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMFs)…. PEMF, attractive because of its noninvasive nature, increases the speed of axon [nerve cell] regeneration in the first week by 22–24% …(Sisken et al., 1989; Rusovan et al., 1992)” (2)

PEMF helps stimulate the repair of cartilage and bone materials as was reported by K. Perjes:

“This double-blind, placebo-controlled study examined the effects of magnetotherapy (PEMF) in patients following herniated disk surgery. Results showed that 52 percent of patients receiving the treatment compared to 30 percent of controls reported being free of symptoms at the time of hospital release.” (3)

Effective treatment of cartilage and bone was reported by in the Journal of Cellular Biochemistry:

The therapeutic effects of electric and magnetic fields have been studied largely for their promotion of connective tissue repair. The most widely studied application concerns bone repair and deals with acceleration of the healing of fresh fractures, delayed and non-unions, incorporation of bone grafts, osteoporosis … More recently the effects of these fields upon the repair of cartilage and soft fibrous tissues have been described. In all these experimental systems and clinical applications an acceleration of … tissue healing has been observed… (4)

The body naturally handles pain by producing endorphins (which are natural chemicals in the body that fight pain) in the central nervous system and the pituitary gland. Endorphins block the transmission of pain signals to the brain.  PEMF stimulates the production of endorphins and is very effective in dealing with pain.

Pain is also caused by inflammation and a of a lack of oxygen in the body. The power of PEMF can penetrate deep into the body and assist in the healing of internal injuries.

PEMF stimulates an energy-carrying molecule found in the cells of all living things, ensuring healing and empowering cells to do what they were designed for. Oxygenation is dramatically increased, and healthy cell life is maintained, while damaged cells are quickly treated or replaced.

PEMF acts directly on the nervous system, glands, cells, tissues and organs. When used consistently, PEMF therapy can bring about a state of relaxation while promoting numerous health benefits at the same time.

Long-term use of PEMF therapy can help the body remodel tissues that tend to be hyper-reactive to chronic or acute stress. Over time, that tissue becomes less and less reactive.

The primary reason many use PEMF therapy is for relaxation.  PEMF’s have been proven to bring the mind and body into a state of relaxation which also improves sleep. PEMF therapy may also prevent an imbalance in the immune system. This is possible because PEMF’s stimulate the cells.

Results show that PEMF therapy is a safe alternative for dealing with sciatica and lower back pain.

Big Trees Inc. Helps Transplant Large Palm Trees

SNOHOMISH, WA: Big Trees Inc., (https://bigtreesupply.com/), a tree sales and transplant company in the Seattle area, was approached by a new client and was asked to help with a transplanting project involving a number of large palm trees.

The client wanted five of the palm trees moved from a commercial property over to a residence, and to replace a dead palm tree with a new one on the same commercial property.

These 16-foot tall palm trees were treated the day before with anti-shock treatment to minimize the loss of hydration to the trees during the process. They were dug and structured into root balls weighing around 400 – 600 pounds each. Once the five trees were loaded up onto Big Trees’ truck and the single palm tree was transplanted onsite, Big Trees’ heavy flatbed truck and trailer with the loader made its way to Mercer Island to have the palm trees planted throughout a lakeside property.

“The transformation that tree transplanting can make to a property can be astounding. One of the most enjoyable and reoccurring stories we hear about is when loved ones or family friends make it to a property where our large tree installations have occurred, and while the person seeing this environment can’t put their finger on it, they know something significant has happened there! Sometimes they are in the shade of the newly planted tree, and just cannot figure out what is new and different,” said Nancy, owner of Big Trees.

Nancy Penrose is the owner of Big Trees Inc., located in Snohomish, WA in the Seattle area. The company is one of the largest tree nurseries in the Seattle area with over 120,000 trees available in over 300 varieties. They not only deliver young trees, but also mature trees in a wide range of sizes. Some types of trees available include spring flowering, deciduous, evergreen, and privacy trees. The company also does tree transplanting including large trees. Their blog can be seen at https://bigtreesupply.com/blog/ or http://arboristblog.com/. They can be reached at 360-563-2700.

When Should You Have a Tree Removed from Your Property?

By Nancy Penrose

As you probably already know, trees can provide several benefits to your home and property. They can add value to your home and they can also provide shade in the warmer months.

However, trees can also have their own risks. Eventually, all trees become too old or unsafe to be kept on your property. So, how can you know when it’s time to get a tree removed?

When you see something strange

If you start to notice something strange is happening to your tree, do not wait. Call an arborist immediately for them to take a look and identify the issue. They’ll be able to let you know what the best next step should be. Dying branches should be removed immediately because they can fall at any moment.

Examine the tree from afar

In order to see if there’s anything wrong with your tree in the first place, you’ll need to take a step back and look at the tree as a whole. Look out for any leaning that’s new (a leaning tree can be a sign that it’s dying), inspect the ground around the base of the tree as the roots can tell you a lot about the health of the tree. If the roots look damaged or look like they’re decaying, the tree has lost some structural support and has the potential of falling at any point. Finally, inspect the tree’s trunk. A crack in the trunk can indicate that a tree is no longer structurally sound.

At Big Trees, we will come out and inspect your tree to see if there are any signs of damage or decay. Just contact us today at (866) 313-2333 to get started.

Silva Construction Gives Tips to Homeowners on a 2nd Story Home Addition

SAN PEDRO, CA: Silva Construction, (https://www.silvaconstruction.com) a construction company, is offering to tips to homeowners who are interested in the possibility of a second story addition onto a one-story home.

Dave Silva, co-owner of Silva Construction, stated “Adding a second story or even a third story addition onto a one-story home can capture new views, which will increase the value along with maximizing square footage on a small lot. This type of project could require moving out of the house for the duration of the renovation but you’ll move back into a home that is twice the size. Here are some things to consider.”

  • Making it all work together. A good design will make your new second story look like it fits with the rest of the house.
  • Structural requirements. A second story will weigh much more than your old roof, so engineers will have to calculate how much weight the first-floor walls and the home’s foundation can carry and how to reinforce it to carry the new weight.
  • Stairs. A new staircase usually takes a bite out of your first-floor rooms. It takes good planning and design choice to minimize the bite.
  • Mechanical. When you increase the size of your home, you will have to re-evaluate the likely upgrade your furnace, water heater and electrical panel.
  • Chimneys. When you have a masonry chimney and add a story to your home, you will have to eliminate the chimney or build it up to above the new roof level.
  • Finishes. Often the style of your doors, trim, wall finish, and flooring, will dictate the finishes in the new story. But adding a new story allows you to change those things if you want.
  • Insulation. When engineering plans requires old siding to be removed from the exterior, it also gives you the chance to install new insulation, which is important because many older homes have poor insulation. And upgrading will give you better energy efficiency.”

The team at Silva Construction has done a number of second story addition projects, and can guide homeowners through the process.

David Clarke and Dave Silva are owners of Silva Construction, Inc., located in San Pedro, CA. The company has over 40 years of experience in remodeling construction, and serves Southern California’s South Bay area, including Westchester, El Segundo, Manhattan Beach, San Pedro, Hermosa Beach, Palos Verdes Estates, Rancho Palos Verdes, Rolling Hills, Harbor City, Lomita, Torrance, and other select areas. PEMF Therapy

A safe alternative method for dealing with anxiety & stress

by Larry Judge

Stress around work or school can lead to an anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders have a complicated network of causes. Stress is defined as the body’s reaction to any change that requires an adjustment or response. The body reacts to these changes with physical, mental and emotional responses. Stress is a normal part of life. You can experience stress from your environment, your body and your thoughts.

Stress is a process, not a diagnosis. When the term “stress” is used in a clinical sense, it refers to a situation that causes anxiety, discomfort and distress for a person. It can lead to other mental health problems like depression. Stress may also contribute to physical illness such as cardiovascular disease.

Anxiety and stress are non-discriminatory. It affects people regardless of their age, race, creed or background. The effects can be deadly and life altering at the least.

Anxiety and stress come in many different fashions. The way people deal with anxiety and stress vary as much as the clothes people wear.

People are looking for safer non-drug methods of handling and dealing with anxiety and stress.

One fascinating method is using PEMF Therapy. PEMF stands for Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields. This process involves directing powerful, pulsed energy waves to different areas of a person’s body.

PEMF Therapy can alter anxiety and stress responses when used daily. It acts directly on the nervous system, glands, cells, tissues and organs. When used consistently, PEMF Therapy can bring about a state of relaxation while promoting numerous health benefits at the same time.

Dr. William Pawluk M.D., MSc a highly respected M.D. and expert in PEMF therapy, has written about the effects of stress and how PEMF therapy devices can be a great tool for helping those suffering from stress. (1)

Stress for long periods of time is unhealthy, and ultimately can cause other health conditions like high blood pressure, heart attack and stroke, and death in some cases.

There are numerous areas in which PEMF therapy can benefit immediately including:

1. Stimulating production of healthy blood cells, both red and white
2. Strengthening the immune system
3. Regulating cortisol, a hormone that can rapidly increase with stress and cause health problems
4. Increasing one’s sense of well-being

When your cells are healthy, they’re in a state of homeostasis. When stress is ignited, the cells release hormones to help the body cope.

Results show that PEMF Therapy is a safe alternative for dealing with anxiety and stress.
