At My Age Is It Really Even Worth Trying To Make Changes

By Cori Stern, DC

Being a Chiropractor that utilizes Nutrition Response Testing®, I get my share of geriatric patients who achieve miraculous results.  They sometimes don’t even tell me about their improvements right away.

Case in point was a woman in her early 80s who came in to see me. She had diabetes and other physical issues. She was on a few different medications at the time.  I did my initial Nutrition Response Testing examination and recommended a standard program using whole food supplements.  After 2-3 weeks on the program, she came in and said that she had a checkup with her primary care doctor.  He reduced all her medications by a third and took her completely off of 1 of them because her blood work looked so good. I told her that was good news and we’ll just keep working on her current program.

A week later she came in and said, “You know, I didn’t tell you this but I have macular degeneration.”   Macular degeneration is a condition where the vision degenerates. It can lead to blindness and often occurs in elderly people.

She said, “I’ve had this dark grey band in my vision and my ophthalmologist was giving me injections in my eyeballs. I got 6 injections and they were very painful. They didn’t help at all but the gray band is gone now. I didn’t even tell you that I had it.  Is there anything that you are giving me that would have helped with that?”

I looked at her program, thought about it and said, “Well, we recommended some zinc for your pancreas, but the eyes need zinc too. Maybe in theory you had a zinc deficiency that was causing or contributing to the diabetes and the macular degeneration and we addressed it.  It looks like everybody’s happy now, your eyes and your pancreas!”  She did so well on the program.  She lost some weight she wanted to lose and was feeling so much better.  The funny thing is when she first came in, she asked me, “At my age is it really even worth trying to make changes?  Do you think I can really improve at my age?”

I asked her the question that I often ask my senior patients, “How much longer would you like to live if you had a choice?” I get them to really think about that and whatever their answer is I say, “Do you want to live those years as healthy as you can be?  Because if you do, then there’s hope because we can actually help you with that!” That conversation helped her to make a firm decision to fully commit to the program and make whatever changes necessary to be as healthy as possible.

I had another interesting geriatric case. This was a woman who was 82 when she came to see me.  She was suffering from an inability to hold her head up – it was just hanging forward. Throughout the day, the weight of her head would just pull it down further.  Her head would go lower and lower to the point that she was literally walking and looking at the floor. She couldn’t look up and it was severely interfering with her ability to function.

This was a very active woman even at 82 years old.  She was very social.  She has a special needs granddaughter that she was taking care of, she ran several of the social groups in her senior development and she was still driving.  It was very distressing to her that she couldn’t stand up straight.  Not to mention, she was very careful with her appearance, always dressing in beautifully coordinated outfits and carefully applied makeup. She was embarrassed by her posture. She said, “This is not a good look for me!”

She had arthritis in her spine as well as osteoporosis.  She had multiple vertebral compression fractures causing a severely increased thoracic kyphosis or “hunchback”.

She had been suffering with this for over a year before coming to see me.  She had been to 8 different doctors.  Before arriving in my office, she was receiving botox injections in her neck, which didn’t help her at all.  They were painful and weren’t improving anything.  None of the doctors she had seen were able to help her.

I did her evaluation and found the “priority” organ, as we say in Nutrition Response Testing.  My evaluation indicated her thyroid as the priority needing help.  I recommended a program and within 3 weeks, she was able to hold her head up!  She kept asking me, “How did this happen?  How did you do this so fast?”  I told her, “I have no idea.  I can’t answer that.  We just use Nutrition Response Testing to find out what your body was missing, and I gave it to you!”  That was 7 years ago.  She is 89 now, still drives and lives her active life doing what she enjoys.

Over the past 7 years I have helped keep her health stable with whatever other issues she’s run into.  When she first came in, she had other conditions that needed to be addressed.  She had high blood pressure and hypothyroidism.  We have been able to keep her stable and improve her health throughout these past seven years.  She really hasn’t aged much in these seven years. She looks exactly the same.  She has a fully intact mind and is very full of life and energy.  She wants to live as long as she can because she wants to be to help her special needs granddaughter.

The goal I have for all my patients, no matter what their age is, is to grow healthier as they age. I always say, “You can be old and healthy at the same time!”

Anything Can Cause Anything

By Cori Stern, DC

As a Nutrition Response Testing® Practitioner it is common amongst our peers to say, “Anything can cause anything.”  Here are a few cases that illustrate that point.

A 62-year-old man came into my office that was taking 3 different high blood pressure medications. He had a series of other complaints too; he had unresolving foot pain, low energy and felt exhausted after working out with a personal trainer.

I did a Nutrition Response Testing evaluation on him and found that his could benefit from support from whole food supplements. We got him started on a program and started cleaning up his diet. Within a very short time his foot pain went away.

This was a happy surprise because I didn’t know what was causing his foot pain to begin with. I certainly didn’t give him a foot pain supplement! Maybe it was related to his circulation? There are times when you don’t know what’s causing what, but here’s the good news – the body’s innate intelligence will fix what’s wrong whether you understand it or not! Anything can cause anything!

Within the next 2 months, his blood pressure began to decrease. When he initially began the program, his blood pressure was still a bit high even on medications. When he saw it coming down, he started stopping the medications without telling me. He monitored his blood pressure 3 times a day and noticed it was normal without any medication!

He was overjoyed when he told me! I recommended that he discuss this with his medical doctor.

He did a great job of continuously monitoring his progress and taking full responsibility for his own health. He noticed that if he didn’t get enough sleep or if he ate too much salt, his blood pressure would rise. He knew that if he was able to make modifications to his lifestyle, he could keep his blood pressure under control. As long as he eats well and takes his whole food supplements, his health is stable. This is a shining example of what can be achieved.

Another case I had was a woman in her late 70’s. She had worked as a  Registered Nurse for many years. She came in with several issues, high blood pressure being one of them. She also had chronic low back pain and minor memory loss.

She was addicted to sugar, so we started working on that. After a few weeks, all these issues were showing improvement, but her blood pressure wasn’t improving. I did a re-evaluation on her about 6 months in.

On her follow-up exam, something new showed up. Her adrenal glands needed some nutritional support. I gave her one whole food supplement for support and BOOM! Within a few days, she texted me and said, “That adrenal supplement brought my blood pressure way down!”

I wasn’t quite expecting that!  I said to myself, “Maybe the blood pressure was stress related and the adrenals are too.” I had never seen that happen before, but again, “Anything can cause anything!”

Big Trees Inc. Transplanted Large Fruit Trees in Central Washington

SNOHOMISH, WA: Big Trees Inc., (, a tree sales and transplant company, was asked to come to Central Washington and transplant a number of large fruit trees from an apple growing property, to the owner’s property a few miles down the road.

The client had called initially in February and began asking questions about what would be involved with moving ten large trees in the Yakima area. After discussing tree varieties and sizes, the limitations and logistics involved, and the long-term care for the trees after transplanting, the client decided to move forward.

The 90-foot tree spade truck can take a root ball of around seven feet in diameter and four feet deep, weighing around 8,000 pounds, with the tree’s trunk and branches adding an additional 1,000 pounds of wood weight. It tends to be best suited for moving trees in the 20 to 25-foot height range.

An estimated cost for the travel and onsite operations was agreed on, and the date was set for the crew and tree spade truck to arrive. The crew left early in the morning on the start day and arrived with plenty of daylight to make progress on the project. The crew stayed overnight and made quick work of the remaining trees the next day, allowing them to drive back to Snohomish well before closing of the shop that day. The newly transplanted trees were in the 20-foot height rand and 10 to 12-feet wide. The trees were spaced out in a field behind a property that the owner is going to be developing into their new residence.

“The 90-foot Big John tree spade truck is an impressive piece of equipment! When all of the access and tree situations line up for the truck’s needs, this machine is a very capable option for moving large trees in a successful and rapid manner,” said Nancy, owner of Big Trees.

Nancy Penrose is the owner of Big Trees Inc., located in Snohomish, WA in the Seattle area. The company is one of the largest tree nurseries in the Seattle area with over 120,000 trees available in over 300 varieties. What is a Certified Arborist and Why Should You Use One?

By Nancy Penrose

Alright, so first things first. What is an arborist? Well, to put it simply, an arborist is a professional who is highly trained in the science of planting, caring for and maintaining trees.

Ok, so what about a certified arborist? A certified arborist is someone who is highly seasoned and has been certified by the International Society of Arboriculture. The only way to become ISA-certified is to pass rigorous certification exams that test one’s knowledge about the various parts of arboriculture, the study of how trees grow and respond to their environment.

Why should I use a certified arborist?

Arborists are tree-care experts. In fact, they are required to have at least 3-years of experience within the field. They also are required to stay up-to-date on the most recent arboriculture techniques. When you use a certified arborist, you’re utilizing the experience, skills and know-how of these professionals so your trees can be properly taken care of on your property.

The trees on your property are an investment that effect the value of your property. Trees that are not taken care of properly can devalue your home and even make create safety hazards. On the flip side, if your trees are well-maintained and properly taken care of, the value of your home can increase and those around it will remain safe.

When you hire a certified arborist, you’ll feel assured that your tree professional knows how to perform any type of tree-care activity, such as pruning, removal, trimming, etc.

At Big Trees, we offer a one-year warranty and a free aftercare visit from our Board Certified Master Arborist when we install trees. Just contact us today at (866) 313-2333 to get started.

PEMF Basics

by Larry Judge

PEMF stands for “pulsed electromagnetic field.”

The earth has an electromagnetic field which pulses with a certain frequency that can be measured. This magnetic pulse is as vital to human and other forms of life as food, air, and water.

Human bodies also pulse with the same basic electromagnetic frequency as the earth. And the electromagnetic pulse from the earth works like a battery recharger for the cells in our bodies.

Any device that works with batteries works great when the batteries are new. But when the batteries get worn out, the device doesn’t work as well or stops working altogether. Then when the batteries get replaced or recharged, the device works great again.

The human body works in a manner similar to an electric battery. Our cells need to be recharged with energy on a regular basis.

The earth emits frequencies that our bodies need in order to be healthy, and that recharge the energy in our cells. You can absorb these frequencies by going barefoot in the grass or on a beach, swimming in a lake, river or ocean, or working in a garden.

But most people don’t get enough of the earth’s electromagnetic frequencies, because they spend the majority of their time disconnected from the earth, in a building with wooden or concrete floors, wearing shoes with rubber soles, or riding in a vehicle with rubber tires. Does this sound like how you spend the majority of your time?

If you spend the majority of your time disconnected from the earth’s recharging electromagnetic frequencies, or if your body is often tired and needs to be recharged, then you should consider using a PEMF mat to supplement the natural electromagnetic frequencies emitted by the earth. The cells in your body can be recharged by spending 10 minutes a day on a PEMF mat, like the PURELIFE PL-3000 PEMF mat.

The Dangers of Exposure to EMFs

by Larry Judge

EMF stands for ElectroMagnetic Fields. Many things generate an electromagnetic field, including the earth, and human bodies. In fact, our bodies need the electromagnetic fields generated by the earth to regularly recharge the energy levels in the cells.

Electromagnetic fields are also generated by man-made devices, such as cell phones, microwave ovens, WiFi, and electrical appliances such as washers, dryers and refrigerators.

During the 20th and 21st centuries, exposure to man-made electromagnetic fields has been steadily increasing, as a result of growing electricity demand, ever-advancing technologies, and changes in social behavior (like greater use of cells phones and social media). This has created ever-increasing artificial sources of electromagnetic fields.

Now, in the age of cell phones, wireless WiFi routers, and the Internet of things, all of which use electromagnetic fields, there are numerous concerns about possible connections between EMF and adverse health conditions. At sufficiently high levels, various bands of electromagnetic radiation have been found to cause negative health effects in people.

Everyone on earth is now exposed to unprecedented levels of man-made electromagnetic fields. Studies are emerging to demonstrate that EMFs may be unsafe.

Symptoms Related to EMF Exposure

The symptoms from the use of microwave ovens, smart meters, WiFi, or cell phones can be minor or inconspicuous at first, but they may become more significant over time.

Chronic high artificial electromagnetic exposure can result in:

  • Insomnia
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Brain fog
  • Dizziness and vertigo
  • Frequent illnesses
  • Adrenal fatigue
  • Hormone imbalances

Why is EMF Exposure a Problem?

It has been known for centuries that the human body is a sophisticated electromagnetic system. Our nervous system and our heart run on electricity, and electrical signals carry the various communications throughout the body.

Exposure to man-made EMFs can interfere with the delicately balanced electromagnetic systems inside of our bodies. Particularly, the brain, the heart, and mitochondria, the parts of cells that break down nutrients, are particularly susceptible to EMF interference. EMF exposure can also worsen inflammatory problems.

PEMF therapy uses electromagnetic fields that are harmonious with the body, to cancel out the effects of harmful EMFs.

The PURELIFE PL-3000 is a full body PEMF mat. 10 minutes a day on this mat can produce remarkable effects.

The PURELIFE UNS EMF Neutralizer is a portable device that you can put in your pocket. Regular use can cancel out the effects of harmful electromagnetic fields.

Silva Construction Offers Soft Story Retrofit Services

SAN PEDRO, CA: Silva Construction, ( a construction company, is now offering soft story retrofit services.

A typical Soft-Story building is a building with two or more stories located over a ground level floor with large openings, such as parking garages, or a commercial store with a large glass front. Without proper retrofitting, these building may be subjected to structural failure during or after an earthquake.

The City of Los Angeles recently passed a law mandating the retrofitting of all wood-frame soft-story structures.

The first step in any soft-story retrofitting project is analyzing the building and determining the best way to strengthen the structure, out of several available options. One of Silva Construction’s experts will determine the best approach.

Dave Silva stated “Getting a soft story structure retrofitted is mandatory in the city of Los Angeles. But even in other cities, this is an important step for an owner of a soft story apartment or retail building. During an earthquake these soft story structures can be very dangerous. Getting them retrofitted is the proactive approach to avoiding serious damage.”

David Clarke and Dave Silva are owners of Silva Construction, Inc., located in San Pedro, CA. The company has over 40 years of experience in remodeling construction, and serves Southern California’s South Bay area, including Westchester, El Segundo, Manhattan Beach, San Pedro, Hermosa Beach, Palos Verdes Estates, Rancho Palos Verdes, Rolling Hills, Harbor City, Lomita, Torrance, and other select areas.
